Dr. Wylie H. Shira
Dr. Wylie H. Shira, 84, of Skyview Towers died the morning of Dec. 27, 2004, in Indian Creek Nursing Center.
Born Dec. 22, 1920, in New Castle, he was a son of the late Wylie H. Sr. and Anna M. Hodgin Shira.
He was married to the former Viola M. Dengler. She died in 1998.
He then married the former Evangeline Selig on May 17, 2002. She survives.
Dr. Shira was a retired optometrist in New Castle. He also had worked for Republic Steel in Youngstown.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a pilot and flew C-46 cargo planes over the “hump” in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations.
Dr. Shira was a member of the New Castle Flying Club, Paws and Taws square dancing club, and the New Castle and Shenango Lions clubs.
He enjoyed flying, fishing, camping and boating.
Dr. Shira was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
In addition to this wife, survivors include two daughters, Ruth A. Coulter of Erie and Dawna M. Loutzenhiser of Salem, Ohio; two sons, Darrell L. Shira and Richard D. Shira, both of New Castle; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Turner-Myers Funeral Home, 208 N. Jefferson St. The Rev. Karl Schoch of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the City Rescue Mission.
